Sadness

Sadness can be felt as a little bit sad or very sad.

You can be sad if you lose a favourite toy or if you do not get a treat after your dinner! Or maybe you have had someone very close to you die, this type of sadness is called grief, and you will want to talk about this to a parent or someone else who can help you understand what you are going through.

If you have had something very sad happen to you, don’t be afraid to feel the sadness. Know that you can let some of this heaviness out from your body. This does not mean that you don’t care about what happened, it means that you allow yourself to have a memory about something without letting it make you feel bad. This is a way to be kinder to yourself.

If you lost your favourite pet, try and remember a happy memory about the pet or something that will bring a smile to your face. In that way you are bringing joy back to your life and having a wonderful memory as well.

You can learn how to do something called tapping that can help you lesson the feeling of sadness that you feel. 

Take a look at the picture of the teddy and the picture of the alien. See which one you prefer. They are showing you where you can tap.

You can go here and see Conal using tapping to get rid of his fear of getting sick in the car!!! You can always change the words and say something like this.

Even though I feel so sad I am a great kid.

I don’t want to forget my pet (whatever you feel sad about).

I want to remember them always.

I want to allow myself feel happy and it is ok to feel happy.

I am a great kid.

Take a deep breath.

This sadness that I feel is making me feel so heavy, I want to let some of the heaviness go now.

It is ok to let the heaviness go.

I am still a great kid without it.

If your sadness is lasting a long time make sure you talk to someone about it.

You might also want to say something like this.

I allow myself not to feel so sad.

It is a sad thing that happened to me and I will never forget the memories I have and I don’t want to forget but I allow myself not to feel so sad.

I want to be able to look back at the memories and be able to smile at them.

I am a great kid.

You can repeat these as many times as you want.

And remember, it is ok to feel all the emotions you feel.
